Last Practice Before the Christmas Holidays

Well I think last night got all of us into the Christmas spirit! What a great turn out! Santa was thrilled to see so many Dolphins come out for his visit. It is not very often that Santa makes a special visit from the North Pole.

There may be only 24 more days until Christmas but we still have allot of swimming to do! We have three meets this month, so everyone will have the opportunity to race before Santa comes. Let keep the wave going...we have had tremendous success so far this season. Let's finish 2008 with a bang! Only three more weeks to go....

The last day of practice differs from group to group so I just wanted to remind everyone when their last day of practice will be and when they will resume back to normal schedule.

Tier 1 & 2: Last day of swimming before the Christmas break is Thursday, December 18, 2008
First day of swimming after the Christmas break is Tuesday, January 06, 2009

Tier 3: Last day of swimming before the Christmas break is Friday, December 19, 2008
First day of swimming after the Christmas break is Monday, January 05, 2008

Tier 4 & Regional: Last day of swimming before the Christmas break is Friday, Dec. 19, 2008
First day of swimming after the Christmas break is Monday, Dec. 29, 2008

If you have any questions about holiday schedule, please do not hesitate to contact any member of the coaching staff.

Updates

Dolphins:

Just a few reminders during this busy time of year:

Christmas Potluck:
Our social committee has coordinated a potluck for our swimmers and families on Sunday, November 30th between 4pm-7pm. We have several peanut allergies so PLEASE NOT PEANUT products in our yummy treats:) Also, there will be a box at the door if you wish to bring a non-perishable item for the food bank.

Clothing Orders:
Must be in to Kim Brawn by Thursday evening. This is our only order for the season.

Swimsuit Order:
Any swimmers needing new suits must place their orders to me by this Friday. I also have lots of goggles and winter toques which make great Christmas gifts.

Officials Training:
The SDSC parents did an AWESOME job officiating our meet last weekend. If you are interested in learning to time / officiate, please let me know. Once I have enough people interested, I will coordinate a time for training – it only takes a couple of hours so please consider this great opportunity.

Thanks everyone. I look forward to seeing you (and Santa) on Sunday!!

Sledge Hockey Information
Sledge Hockey is the Paralympic version of the ice hockey and since its debut on the Paralympic program at the 1994 Paralympic Winter Games, it is quickly becoming one of the most popular sports.

Sledge hockey is fast paces highly physical and played by male athletes with a physical disability in the lower part of the body. It is played exactly like ice hockey except players sit in a sled with blades on the bottom and they move across the ice by pushing themselves with picks. The picks double as hockey stick blades when flipped around.

For more information on the event, check out the CARI website at www.caripei.ca

Swim PEI Swim Clinics

Hello Parents,

I know some of you have checked out the Charlottetown Bluephins website lately and noticed that Swim PEI is holding stroke clinics at the CARI pool. We haven't communicated this information with our Club because we haven't received a clinic schedule/details but we have recently confirmed that all Island swimmers can attend these clinics. I do not have any additional information from what appears on the Bluephins website which I cut and pasted below.

Swim PEI Swim Clinics

Nov. 9th, 08-13 and over Butterfly Clinic
Nov. 30th, 08-13 and over Breaststroke Clinic
Dec. 7th, 08-12 and under Breaststroke Clinic

Time is from 4:00pm-6:00pm at the CARI pool, pool space for 25 swimmers and the cost is $20/swimmer (payable to Swim PEI).

To register, e-mail Jamie Whynacht at info@sportykids.ca and put clinic in the subject line and include your athlete's name and Club in the body of the e-mail.

I do know that Swim PEI is working on securing pool time at our pool to host swim clinics in the Summerside area. Once we receive a complete schedule and details for the swim clinics, we will be sure to communicate that with you.

Thanks everyone!

CONGRATULATIONS - J Hammer

As many of you know, Swim Canada conducted their annual meeting here on PEI last week. As part of this event, Swim Canada hosted their awards banquet Saturday night.

It is my sincere pleasure to inform you that J Hammer was awarded a Swim Canada award for his dedication and commitment to swimming. As Dolphins, we know first hand how lucky we are to have J involved with swimming. J has served in many roles such as president of our club for many years, website design and support, meet official, meet manager, and coach (I know I am forgetting lots!). We are blessed to have a team member who isn’t afraid to ‘dream out loud’ and make dreams come true. He is our swimmers number one fan and the success our club has experienced the past few years is largely in part to his leadership.

Congratulations J from the SDSC!

Swimming Cancelled

Hi Dolphins:
Please note that swimming will be cancelled:

October 31st - Halloween

November 1st - Swim meet in Moncton (most swimmers and coaches will be attending)

Thanks,

So parents....PLEASE mark your calendars, October 24, 2008 for the following times:

3:30-4:00: Presentation by Chelsey Gotell and Andrew Cole. Chelsey will have her medals from the Paralympics with her. This is a once and a lifetime opportunity for our swimmers so please try to make arrangements for your swimmer to be there.

See you all on Friday!

I am thrilled to announce that our bus to Moncton is almost full. We have only 10 vacant spots remaining. For those of you that missed the parents information session, we took registrations for the Moncton Meet that evening. If you have not contacted myself of Tanya Tynski to register your swimmer for this meet, please do so ASAP as the seats are going fast!

I spoke briefly about the meet the other night but I wanted to provide you with all the meet details (see below).

Date: November 1, 2008
Location: Universite De Moncton, CEPS Pool
Warm-Up: 8:50 AM for a start time of 9:50 AM (not sure at this point what time the meet will be over but we will be confirming bus pick-up and drop off times soon). Please note...bus will leave from the Credit Union Place on Saturday AM.
Cost for the Meet: Including Bus/Pizza- $43.00
No Bus/Pizza- $18.00
Meet Entry & Payment Deadline: October 24, 2008

This is going to be a long day for our swimmers. I would recommend that they pack a healthy lunch and snacks and bring a water bottle. There is a canteen there where they can purchase muffins, sandwiches, apples, etc. I know there isn't great selection but could find something for a snack. Pizza and juice will be provided for the swimmers on the bus during the drive back to PEI.

Should you require additional information, please do not hesitate to contact either myself or Tanya Tynski.

Looking forward to our excursion to Moncton!

50 /50 Draw - Volunteers Needed!

Hi Folks:

I was approached by the City of Summerside to see if the SDSC would be interested in participating in the 50/50 draws during the junior hockey tournament this coming weekend. If we sell the tickets, we can get 25% of the total revenue. The Caps are playing twice over the weekend so we stand to make some money with this opportunity.

This is outside of our one required fundraiser - the swimathon in February -but it seems like a great opportunity -and we can use the money!

The 50/50 process is electronic and is geared to older swimmers (13+) and parents. If you are willing to give us a couple of hours over the weekend, please let me know ASAP and I will draw up a schedule. You can either respond by email or call me at home (436-5794) Plus, you get to watch great hockey for FREE!

Thanks everyone, and wishing you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving if I don't see / talk to you before that :) Cheers,

Tanya Tynski

Hello Dolphin Swimmers and Families!

I behalf of the coaches...welcome back Dolphin swimmers and families! We would also like to extend a warm welcome to all of the new swimmers and their families...welcome to our Club! We have lots of new faces this year....17 new swimmers to date! We also have two new coaches that we would like to welcome to our coaching staff, Jennifer Power-Hawrylak and J Hammer. Jennifer will be coaching our little guys and gals in the Tier 1 group and J will be assisting Ann with the Tier 2 group. So welcome everyone for another season with the Summerside Dolphin Swim Club.

As you know, the first day of practice was yesterday. It was so nice to see all the smiling faces back on the pool deck. Parents, please check the schedule to see when your swimmer(s) have practice. Just a reminder to those swimmers that have early morning practice...there will be NO morning practice for the first two weeks. The first early morning practice will be Tuesday, October 07, 2008 (Regional Group), a few more Saturday morning sleep-ins for you!

Parents, please make sure your swimmer(s) comes to practice with the appropriate training attire. For swim practice your swimmer will need: a bathing suit, a bathing cap (for those with long hair), goggles and sandals. Those swimmers that are in the Tier 4/Regional Group, they will need to bring gym clothes and running sneakers.

I am sure many of you have lots of questions about our Club, practice, swim meets, etc. We will try to address all our questions at the Parents Info/Social Night on October 15, 2008 but in the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact either myself or any of the coaches. We want your experience with the Dolphin Swim Club to be a positive one!

Looking forward to sharing another great season with all of you! Go Dolphins!

Sad News

Dear Dolphins,

It is with a heavy heart that I write to tell you of the passing David Harding. Dave died suddenly this weekend in the Magdalene Islands. Dave is the father of Josh and Andrew Harding of the Bluephins Swim Club. Not only did he leave his mark with the Bluephins, but contributed to our sport provincially through years of involvement with Swim PEI. He was also a critical player in the development of the East Coast Short Course Championships here in PEI.

I know that many of you knew Dave and his family and this message is very difficult. Warm thoughts to each of you...

The arrangements have not been finalized at this time; however, I will forward them when they become available. Please join with me in prayer for the family during this most difficult time.

Dolphins Year End Banquet

The 2nd most (1st being Garden of the Gulf!) exciting event of the year is almost here. The Summerside Dolphin Swim Club Year End Banquet is going to be a first class event this year. The organizers have been working extremely hard and the coaches have been busy preparing their own stuff for this event. It is going to be a night to remember!!

For the new families of our Club, I want to emphasize the importance of this event. The Dolphins Banquet is organized entirely for the swimmers. This is the one opportunity where we get to celebrate the swimmer's hard work and dedication to the sport and recognize swimmers for their outstanding accomplishments. During the banquet, we will be presenting the Performance Chart Awards, the Club Awards and special Recognition Awards. As well, every swimmer on our team will walk away with a special gift from our Club!

Here are banquet details. Please note the deadline for purchasing tickets.

Date: Tuesday, June 10, 2008
Location: Credit Union Place
Time: 6:00 PM Sharp!
Dress Attire: Dust off your nicest duds! Business casual is appropriate.
Ticket Cost: $14.00/person
Ticket Sales: The last time to purchase tickets is TODAY from 4:30-5:30 PM at the pool. If you cannot make it to the pool tonight to purchase tickets, you must call Lisa Finkle TONIGHT at 888-2432 to confirm your attendance.

There seems to be a bit of confusion about the meal vs. the awards ceremony. This is one single event, not two separate events. There are things scheduled to take place throughout the entire evening and everyone that plans on attending the event needs to be there at 6:00 PM sharp! If your swimmer(s) and family would like to attend this event then everyone attending must purchase a ticket. You need a ticket to be able to attend this event. I hope that clarifies any confusion.

If you have any other questions regarding the Year End Banquet, please do not hesitate to contact me.

I look forward to seeing all of you at the Banquet!!

Grocery Bagging Update

Hello everyone,

I have heard back from some of you but not all. Above is the roster as it sits today (click on it to enlarge). As you can see the 3pm-6pm shifts is a little light and we require two parents to supervise that shift as well. Please email me if I have left you off the list or if you are available; there is room for those swimmers I haven’t heard back from. Again if you are 11 and over this is an event you can participate in.

Thank you again for your support,

St. John Updates and Other Info

Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to give all of you an update on somethings for the St. John meet. To date I have 11 swimmers confirmed for this meet. Those swimmers are:

Jessica Campbell
Carson Dillon
Jenn Dillon
Gavin Cousins
Emily Finkle Hammer
Maggie Finkle Aucoin
Jessica Proctor
Taylor Desroches
Roy Paynter
Molly Wedge
Kate Rundle

If your swimmer plans on attending this meet and their name does not appear on the list, please contact me ASAP! Entries are due tomorrow.

So... to date we do not have enough swimmers to rent a bus but we would like to car pool to the meet together. So we are wondering:
1. Who needs a drive?
2. Who has room in their car that would be able to take a couple extra people?

If there isn't enough room is the cars that are going over, we will rent a 7 passenger van for our team so we can go together. Please e-mail me ASAP your status.

Hotels rooms have been booked for our team at the Hilton. Here is the hotel info.

Hilton St. John
Tel: 1-800-561-8282
Code #: SWIA08 (give the code # when you call to book your room)
Cost: $119+ taxes/night + $16 for parking

The rooms will be held until May 20th, 2008 so please call before then with your credit card # to book your room.

FYI: I am not sure if any of you have been to this pool before but the hotel is connected to the pool by the pedway which is also connected to the mall. This makes it very convenient for everyone as we can walk to and from the pool together (parents you can stay in bed until the meet starts!). As well there are lot of places to eat, shop, etc.

Also, just wanted to let everyone know that there is NO SWIMMING on Monday, May 19, 2008 due to the holiday. Practice will return to regular schedule on Tuesday, May 20, 2008.

If anyone has any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

See you all soon!

NO PRACTISE TOMORROW MORNING

Hello again....no practice for the Regional Group tomorrow AM. I spoke with Barb MacNeill this afternoon and she is not sure when the pool temperature will be back down to normal so practice is cancelled for the AM. Check back tomorrow for updates on the afternoon practices.

Thanks everyone!

Coach Tracy

NO PRACTISE TODAY: MONDAY, MAY 12, 2008

Hello Everyone,

There will be NO PRACTISE today due to the high pool temperature. They are trying to get it fixed but it is still too high to run a practice so we are going to cancel for today. Practice is still on for tomorrow. If there are any changes, we will post it on the blog so please check back tonight/tomorrow.

Sorry for the short notice!

Grocery Bagging May 17th !

Good Morning everyone,
An outstanding and easy fundraising opportunity has come our way again. Sobeys has offered this Saturday for a grocery bagging opportunity for the club. This is a fantastic opportunity for a fundraiser and one that we can not pass up. Sobeys is allowing us to man as many lanes as possible this Saturday May17th from 9am to 6pm. This fundraiser is only available to swimmers 11 and over as it will involve working for a three hour shift without fooling around. The swimmers will be required to pick up the filed grocery baggers (once the cashier fills) them and place them in the customers cart. It is easy work but it does make for a long session. The bigger the smiles the more that goes into the bucket. Please wear your team clothing

Click on the chart above to see the breakdown the shift placements. Please contact me ASAP with confirmation of your child’s availability. I would also ask parents to volunteer for a shift to help supervise the children. I will be on hand for a shift that day but the club does need preferably two or three parents on hand.

Thank You For Your Help

Hi everyone,

I would like to thank all those who volunteered this weekend. To put together and run a weekend like this takes a great deal of effort from everyone. The support from all the club's parents, master swimmers, and on and off island officials was fantastic and greatly appreciated. It is unbelievable the advancement swimming is making; which is a direct result from the time and effort people are putting into volunteering.

Thank you again for your help this weekend!

Garden of the Gulf Re-cap

Hello Everyone,

Well where do I begin...

What an amazing meet for our Dolphin swimmers! We might not have won the Overall High Point Team Trophy but that doesn't matter. The way our swimmers performed this weekend was extraordinary! The coaches were especially impressed with our younger swimmers. They raced their little hearts out scoring several points for our team. Every single swimmer at the meet achieved best times which is fantastic. That is really what swimming is all about!

Our team captured several awards this weekend. I would like to acknowledge our award winners.

High Point Winners
Gary Paynter- 8 & Under Boys
Anna Son- 9-10 Girls
Molly Wedge- 13-14 Girls
Andrew Brawn- 13-14 Boys
Emily Finkle Hammer- 15 & Over Girls

Swim PEI Award Winners
Molly Wedge- Alex B. Campbell Award, Swim PEI's most prestigious award
Andrew Brawn- Top "A" Male Swimmer of the Year
J Hammer- Administrator of the Year

Provincial Record Breakers
Maggie Finkle Aucoin- 11-12 Girls 1500m Freestyle
Molly Wedge- 13-14 Girls 50m Freestyle

A huge congratulations to all of the award winners and the entire Dolphin team. You guys were amazing!

I also want to extend a big thank-you to the Summerside Dolphin's Executive and to all the parents/volunteers that made this event happen. The meet and awards ceremony was fantastic! Thank-you!

Just reminder that there is NO SWIMMING today for all groups. On Tuesday, there is NO SWIMMING in the AM for the Regional group and there is NO SWIMMING tomorrow afternoon for the Tier 1 & 2's. The Tier 4 and Regional groups will swim Tuesday afternoon from 4:00-5:30. The remainder of the week will be back to regular scheduled practice times.

Congratulations again to all of our swimmers...you made your coaches proud!

See you all soon!

Team Building Event

Hello Everyone,

Well we are three sleeps away from Provincials. The events are picked and the swimmers are working hard at perfecting their race strategies. The Dolphins Swim Club will have 42 swimmers participating this weekend. The coaches are thrilled with the amount of swimmers participating and hopefully next year we can have the entire team participate as this is one of the most exciting events for swimming on PEI!

On Friday, May 02, 2008, we are going to have a team building event for our swimmers at the pool from 4:15-5:30. For the first 45 minutes we are going to make posters to hang up around the pool deck. Our Club is going to provide the Bristol board but we are asking the swimmers to bring their own markers, pencil crayons, crayons, stickers, etc. to decorate the posters. No glitter glue please!! We have to keep the pool deck clean for the swim meet the next day. Following the poster decorating, we are going to practice our team cheers. The swimmers won't be getting into the pool so they do not need to bring their bathing suits. Street clothing is fine but just make sure they pack sandals or other footwear to wear on the pool deck.

Just a reminder, on Saturday and Sunday morning the warm-up starts at 8:00 AM. Please have your swimmer on the pool deck, ready for warm-up by 7:55 AM. Also, please make sure your swimmer brings their team clothing to wear on the pool deck and team cap to wear when racing. If your swimmer does not have a cap, they can be purchased from one of the coaches for $6.00.

That's all for now....hope to see all of you on the pool deck this weekend. Don' t forget your poms poms!!

Garden of the Gulf Provincial Championships Host by SDSC

The club is preparing for the Garden of the Gulf Provincial Swim Championships which is to be held on May 3rd & 4th in Summerside. As the host club we have been tasked with the responsibility of rounding up officials for the 2 day event. I would ask all members of the club and the Master swimmers to mark these dates on your calendar and volunteer for this event. Attached is the duties roster and as you can see there are some non-swimming related duties folks can volunteer for as well. This is going to be a wonderful weekend of swimming culminating with Swim PEI’s annual awards presentations.
As always swimming, like life, is what you make it. So please help make this a great weekend!

SPEC PERFORMANCE CHART- SWIM WELL, SWIM FAST

The Spec Performance Chart is a program that was designed by Simon Faucher and Pierre Svartman from Quebec. The program was designed to teach and evaluate swimming techniques and skills for competitive swimmers. The program has four levels, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum however the Dolphin Club added an introductory level called "Skill". Coaches will conduct skill assessments throughout the season with their training group. Swimmers need to be able to perform each skill properly in the level to graduate from that level. Swimmers will be awarded medals for each level that they complete at the Dolphins Banquet in June.

The Spec Performance Chart will also be used, along with time standards in three events to determine the placement of swimmers within each training group. Click here view complete details on this program.

Testing will be taking place:

Tier 3 & 4: Wednesday, April 9, 2008 from 4:00-6:00
Tier 1 & 2: Friday, April 11, 2008 from 4:00-6:00

Sessions will also be organized for the 26 of May as well

Please note the following changes for the Tier IV & Regional Group...

Friday, April 4, 2008- NO SWIMMING

Monday, April 7, 2008- Both Tier IV and Regional Groups will practice from 4:30-6:00 PM

Pentathlon Meet, Saturday, April 5, 2008

Hello Parents!

I just received the meet package today for the Pentathlon Meet that is taking place next weekend in Charlottetown. For those of you that are unfamiliar with how a pentathlon meet works, here is brief description:

In a pentathlon meet, swimmers will compete by age (e.g. 8 year olds, 9 year olds, etc.) and must swim every stroke and an IM event. For example, 10 year old swimmer entered in this type of meet will swim the 50m butterfly, 50m breastroke, 50m backstroke and 50m freestyle and 100m IM. Their times achieved in each event is then added together for a total time for the 5 events. The fastest cumulative time wins the "pentathlon title".

Here are the meet details for the PEI Pentathlon Meet....

Date: Saturday, April 5, 2008
Location: CARI Pool, Charlottetown
Warm-Ups: 9:00 AM for a 9:45 AM Start Time
Meet Fees: $20.00/swimmers (for the 5 events)
Meet Entry Deadline: Tuesday, April 1, 2008

Parents, please notify your SWIMMER'S COACH by the April 1st deadline if your swimmer(s) would like to participate in this swim meet.

Thanks everyone!

Hi Everyone,

I would like to let everyone know that the grocery Bagging was a hug success! We raised a little over $1500. 00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would like to thank Sobeys and their staff for their support, they were very helpful and made the swimmers feel welcomed and relaxed. I would suggest that we as a club show our appreciation to Sobeys by supporting them whenever possible.

I would also like to thank Linda Campbell for securing the date and helping me organize the day . Thanks to Kim Brawn for rolling the money, Sandi and Ruth Rundle, Jules Aucoin, Kirk Steele, Brian Proctor for supervising, and of course the swimmers themselves for doing the work.
Great job all the way around.

Now on to the Swim-a-thon. The sheets are available at the front desk of the wellness centre if your child hasn't received them from the coach yet. Click on the link below for complete details of the event . Everything you need to know is there and if you have any question please contact me.

Grocery Bagging March 22

Good Morning everyone,

I am touching base to let everyone know that we have a date for a grocery bagging this weekend at Sobeys. This is a fantastic opportunity for a fundraiser and one that we can not pass up. Sobeys is allowing us to man as many lanes as possible on March 22nd from 9am to 6pm.

Click on the chart above to see the breakdown the shift placements. Please contact me ASAP with confirmation of your child’s availability. I would also ask parents to volunteer for a shift to help supervise the children. I will be on hand throughout the day along with Linda Campbell to oversee things.

For those parents of swimmers that are not old enough to bag (a reminder to all parents in general) the Swim-a-thon sheets are available at the front desk of the wellness centre or by emailing my at jhammer@kennet.pe.ca. Details are available at www.summersidedolphins.ca/swimathon.html

Hello Everyone,

Here is the duty roster for the swim meet this weekend. Click on it to enlarge it. The warm up starts at 9am and the races start at 10am. I would like to thank everyone for participating, swim meets take a lot of effort to coordinate and having everyone pitch in really makes a difference.

Angele Arsenault will be our head timer for the meet. Angele is also the official’s coordinator for East Cost Short Course Swim Championships which are held in Charlottetown on Feb. 28 - Mar 2. This is Atlantic Canada’s premier short course competition. Angele will be looking for volunteer officials for this four day event. I would ask everyone that is interested in helping out for this special event to approach me or Angele and let us know what days you would be willing to assist.

Practice Tonight (Wednesday) & Tomorrow (Thursday)

Hello Everyone,

Well! Quite the weather we have been experiencing over the past few days. I hope all of you got your power back. Mike and I were lucky enough this time around not to lose power. See you all in Moncton!
