Canada Games Volunteer Opportunity!

Dear Swimming Parent,

INVITE TO OFFICIATE AT 2009 CANADA GAMES
As you are aware PEI is hosting the 2009 Canada Games from August 15 to August 29, 2009.

For our Swimming community all the focus is on the second week of the Games (August 23 to 29) when we host Canada Games Swimming at the CARI Pool in Charlottetown and the 10 kilometer Open Water Swim in the South West River in Clinton. Swim PEI has been working over the past two years to provide training through clinics and on deck mentoring to ensure that any member of our swimming community that wanted to be involved with the 2009 Games would be certified.

Recently some people have asked what they can do at Canada Games Swimming.
1) Canada Games in conjunction with Swim Canada is responsible to select the Major Officials (Referee, Starter, Chief Inspector, etc) from people across the country.

2) Swim PEI is responsible to select the Minor Officials (Lane Timers, Head Lane Timers, Marshal, Recorder/Scorers, Runner and Safety Marshal). This means that Swim PEI needs to have 34 people for each of our 10 swimming sessions during the week. It is our intent to fill these position with Swim PEI members then to offer additional position to our neighboring provinces of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

To be a Minor Official, we ask that you be Level II certified (Timekeeper, Stroke and Turn and one other from the list below)
• Clerk of Course;
• Chief Timekeeper;
• Meet Manager;
• Chief Finish Judge/Chief Judge Electronics/Recorder Scorer (counts as 1 position);
• Starter.

Many of our members have already achieved this level, however some have asked if there is any refresher sessions available. Therefore Swim PEI is offering three refresher sessions to help people achieve their Level II. These sessions will only deal with Timekeeper, Stroke and Turn and Chief Timekeeper.

If you have any questions regarding your current level please contact Gardiner MacNeill, Swim PEI Chair - Officials, atagmacneill@islandtelecom.com.
