Update on Practice for This Morning

Hello Everyone,

It is snowing and blowing snow here in Charlottetown causing white-out conditions making it not safe for Dave and I to travel to Summerside this morning. I have called Lori and she is going to be there. I have placed a call with Lance and I am not sure if he is going to make it to Summerside either so I have given a practice to Lori.

The "Insanity" workout is cancelled for today so practice will end at 11:00.

Hope to see everyone tomorrow!

Dolphins Practice Cancelled Today

Hello Everyone,

Please note... the Dolphins practice that was scheduled from 11:00-1:00 has been cancelled due to the weather.

As for the clinic in Charlottetown, I have not heard from Swim PEI yet so I am assuming it is a go but unless it clears up, I would not recommend travelling to Charlottetown. It is nasty out and roads are ice packed.

Practice will be a go for tomorrow morning unless the storm continues overnight so please check the blog in the AM before heading to practice.

Be safe if you are out on the roads today!

Tri-Team Clinic

Hello Parents,

Here are the details regarding the clinic for the Tri-Team swimmers that is going to be held on January 27, 2010.

Location: CARI Pool
Time: 1:00-4:00 PM

I just found out from Swim PEI this week that there is a $25.00 fee for this clinic. I was not aware of this fee, that is why it was not communicated earlier. My apologies. Please make cheque payable to Swim PEI and have your swimmer bring it to the clinic.

I have just heard the most recent forecast and there is a storm brewing for Boxing day and the 27th. Please check the blog or call me at home BEFORE you venture to Charlottetown just to make sure this clinic is not cancelled.

If you have any questions/concerns regarding the Tri-Team, please do not hesitate to give me a call.

I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas!! 2 more sleeps!

No Practice Saturday AM

Just a reminder, there will be no morning practice on Saturday, December 18, 2010 because the majority of the swimmers are at the Moncton meet.

The Tier 3 and 4 swimmers are welcome to join the Regional group on Friday from 4:00-6:00 for an extra workout if they'd like.

Best of luck to our Dolphin swimmers that are heading to Moncton this weekend!

Congratulations Dolphin Swimmers!!

I would like to extend a very SPECIAL CONGRATULATIONS to the nine Dolphin swimmers that were invited to be part of the 2011 PEI Tri Team. Several other Dolphin swimmers were very close. The nine swimmers that have been identified are:

11-12 Girls:
Anna Son
Grace Meade
**Alternate: Emily Steele

11-12 Boys:
Nathan Fennell
Chase Holt

13-14 Girls:
Julia Campbell
Maggie Finkle Aucoin

13-14 Boys:
Bearon Bracegirdle
Drake Holt
Evan Tynski

These swimmers will have the opportunity to attend a special training camp and swim meet in January 2011. They will train and compete with Team Nova Scotia and Team New Brunswick. A very unique opportunity for our Dolphins swimmers and a little taste of what it is like to be part of a Provincial Team!

The team was selected by identifying the top six boys and girls in the province in every age group. All Island swimmers were ranked by adding together the FINA points in the top three races for every swimmer (11 & Over). FINA points is the world ranking system for swimming. Every time acheived in an event has a FINA point value. For example, a time of 30.89 in the 50m Freestyle for Women has a FINA point value of 456 while a time of 30.86 has a point value of 458. For more detailed information on the selection process, please visit the Swim PEI website at http://www.swimpei.com/ .

Once again, CONGRATULATIONS to our nine Dolphin swimmers that made the team! We are looking forward to seeing you compete among the best in the Maritimes!

Moncton Meet

(for T3, T4, and Regional parents)

Hello Parents,

I have heard back from most of the parents regarding the Quebec trip and I am sad to report that we do not have enough interest to attend the meet.

The Quebec meet was scheduled to be our big taper meet for the end of this training cycle. Our swimmers have been training extremely hard and are ready for the rest for a big meet. Also, the Quebec meet was going to be our last opportunity for our swimmers to qualify for the provincial team. Since Quebec is a no go, Dave and I would like to offer another meet that is closer to home, for those swimmers wishing to race

There is a meet in Moncton on December 17-19, 2010. This is a timed finals meet where swimmers can swim a maximum of 8 events.NB "B" standards are needed and we do have many that are eligible to attend.

Here is what we are offering:

#1: Swimmers go over to Moncton on Saturday AM and compete Saturday only.

#2: Swimmers go over to Moncton on Saturday AM and spend one night and compete both Saturday and Sunday.

Tanya Tynski have offered to chaperone for this meet so we can make arrangements for travel and hotels together to keep the cost to a minimum.

Can you please let me know by Monday, November 29 if a.) you are interested in going to this meet and b.) are you interested in travelling/staying together?

Thanks everyone! Looking forward to hearing back from you! email contact is:

Fall Splash

Well another successful Fall Splash is behind us. Thanks to everyone who ran the computer, prepared food, officiated, time keepers, set up of the pool, runners or anything else I'm forgetting. It takes many volunteers to run a successful meet and it is much appreciated. I also sent a big thank you to the Moncton and Charlottetown clubs for filling in the spots that we were short on people. It would be great for us to return the favour when called upon.

Thanks again.

Great To Be Back!!

Hello Everyone,

Well, today was the day...I left my little munchkin at home and had my first practice back, and it was an early one at that! I was so thrilled to be back on the deck to see all the swimmers. I have many new faces in my group so it was nice to connect with them and get a peek at where everyone is at in their training which by the way, they are all in super duper shape! This mornings practice was fantastic! It took me a few minutes to remember how to work my watch but I quickly got into the swing of things! HAHA!

I am very excited for the meet this weekend. I know we are going to have a pile of super fast swims! Also, I just wanted to make a note that I will spending allot of time observing this weekend at the meet, taking notes on where the swimmers are at and where to go from here. If you have any questions about the training, meet schedule, or just want to touch base, feel free to come and chat with me. I know I haven't been as available as I normally am at the beginning of the season so please, come and chat :o)!

I also wanted to take this time to acknowledge our coaches. Many of them have filled in for me over the past two months. Thank-you so much for all of your hard work and dedication to the team. I would not have been able to stay home with Mya for the past two months if it wasn't for you guys so a sincere THANK-YOU. I really enjoyed my extra time at home.

Looking forward to the great season ahead! See you tomorrow on the deck!

Club Updates - Meet this Weekend

Hi Dolphins!
Hope everyone has enjoyed this amazing Fall weekend  There are few updates for parents and Dolphins below….

Fall Splash:
Our biggest meet of the year is next weekend. The format is heats / finals which means we will be having four short sessions – Friday evening, Saturday morning, Saturday evening and finishing Sunday morning.

At this point – we do not have enough volunteers to run this meet. We will be asking the Charlottetown Bluefins to help, but our club needs to do its part. If your child is swimming, please consider volunteering. We need a lot of timers and we are also short for stroke / turn. Contact Paula at jdaucoin@islandtelecom.com or Tanya at tmtynski@pei.sympatico.ca

Welcome Back Tracy:

Welcome back to head coach Tracy Stevenson! Tracy will be returning to the deck starting this week on a part time basis until after Christmas. A big thank you to our coaching team for picking up extra practices up to this point – you are very appreciated! Also, thanks to parents and swimmers during this interim period.

Swim Suits:
Anyone wishing to order swim suits / bags / goggles should contact Tanya before November 20th tmtynski@pei.sympatico.ca. This will be the last order before Christmas.

Clothing Order:
We have not been able to find a volunteer this year to coordinate team clothing. If you are interested, please let a member of the executive know ASAP – many parents like to order clothing for Christmas and our time is running very short to make this happen.

Meet Manager Clinic:
Swim PEI will be hosting a meet manager clinic at the CUP on Wednesday, November 17th. If you are interested, please contact Kirk Steele at hammersteele@hotmail.com

Christmas Potluck:
Karen Steele is coordinating our social committee once again this year. Thanks Karen! We are planning a Christmas Potluck this year which is always fun. The date will be announced very soon so please check back. Anyone wishing to help Karen with this initiative can contact her at hammersteele@hotmail.com

This is an exciting time of year – lots happening in your club. Thanks everyone for your continued support, Tanya

Thank you Great First Meet

Thank you to everybody who volunteered officiating for the meet this weekend! The meet ran extremely well, and it was a great club effort. A special thank you to Debbie Bulger and all the others who contributed food for our volunteers. As always - a big thank you to our dedicated coaching staff!

It takes a lot of effort to pull off a meet and it is great to have such a involved group of parents ensuring our Island swimmers have fun meet.

Also, a big thank you to Marguerite Middleton, Margaret Whitrow and the rest of the Charlottetown parents for volunteering her time and officiating the meet.

Remember, we will hosting our next meet in Nov, and hopefully we will have the same great participation that we had this weekend.

Breastroke Clinic

Hello Everyone,

I am pleased to announce that our Club is going to be offering stroke clinics again this year. These clinics provide a unique opportunity for your swimmer to work on technique that is specific to their individual stroke. This year, we will be using an underwater video camera for some of the clinics. This will provide your swimmer will the opportunity to see themselves swim while the coach is providing feedback. This will make it easier for the swimmer to understand what the coach is talking about when it comes to stroke mechanics.

The stroke clinics are going to be offered in two different sessions, 10 & Under and 11 & Over. Each clinic can accommodate 12 swimmers and will be on a first come, first serve basis. The cost is $20/swimmer. The first stroke clinic is breastroke. Here are the details....

Date: October 23, 2010
Time: 10:30-12:00- 11 & Over
12:00-1:30- 10 & Under
Registration Deadline: Friday, October 22, 2010

To register, please contact me at tracyguimond@summersidedolphins.ca . Registration fees must be paid by the registration deadline. Please make cheques payable to SDSC and drop them off in the locked box at the CUP front desk.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

No parent on deck policy/ volunteering

I'm receiving a few emails about the No parent on deck policy. This is not a new policy. We are simply reminding parents of the policy. The new part of the policy is the fact we are allowing parents of Tier 1A children to remain in the stands until Christmas, and stressing to parents not to approach coaches on deck while coaching. The Junior Dolphin program is in the shallow pool which is right beside the viewing area, so parents would not be sitting in the stands to watch their child, because the viewing area is closer. The Summerside Dolphins is s competitive swim club and the coaches want your child's undivided attention while they are in the pool. My apologies to anyone that felt we were putting a new policy in place because of parents interfering with coaches. This is not the case. Our policy is not unlike many other organizations. A child learning how to skate can not have the parent on the ice with them. Parents can not watch a child taking Tae Kwon Do lessons. Dance lessons do not allow parents in the room, etc. We have qualified coaches/lifeguards on deck. We are not asking parents to leave the pool entirely. They simply have to watch from the viewing area which is 30 feet or so further than the stands. Not everything the Executive does is popular with every parent, but we are trying to be fair to the needs of the coaches, parents and swimmers. The Executive are all volunteers and are all Dolphin parents as well. We are doing the best we can. We welcome more help. We have positions open if you would like to contribute.

For swim meets, by all means, sit in the stands and encourage your children while they are competing......but even better than that, volunteer for local meets. Timekeep...take a stroke and turn course. I've put up several courses, but have not received any response. We can not run a swim meet without volunteers and it becomes increasingly difficult to ask the same parents to volunteer meet after meet. The more help the better.

Amendment to Parent/Swimmer Code of Conduct and Contact Info

This information will also be sent to everyone by email as well. Please keep for reference, and respond to any member of the Executive through email that you have received it. The Executive/Head Coach's emails are provided below as well as the link to the Dolphin website.

This notice is not meant to replace the Parent/Swimmer Code of Conduct that each parent/swimmer was to sign, but is in addition to it. It is also not meant to infringe on the coaches ability/responsibility to address minor issues on deck. If you have not received/signed the Parent/Swimmer Code of Conduct, please advise us and we will provide you with a copy. A signed copy is mandatory in order for your child to swim with the SDSC.

The club's mandate is to provide a safe, supportive environment for parent, child, coach and Executive. In keeping with this mandate, we are adding the following items to the code of conduct. These items do not just apply to the swimmer. They apply to swimmer, parent, coach and executives. Our aim is to have a successful, rewarding season for all.

No parents on deck
An exception to this rule is parents of Tier 1A children only will be allowed to watch their kids in the stands until Christmas break. After Christmas break they will be subject to the same policy as the rest of the swim club. Parents may watch their children from the viewing area just inside the pool. We are trying to keep our coaches coaching during practice time and not fielding questions or taking complaints/criticism. Repeated occurrences of parents being on deck may result in the parent not being allowed on the pool premises during SDSC activites. For serious situations, it may result in suspension or removal of their child from the club on recommendation of the coaches/executive. If you need to talk to the coach, we ask that you talk to them before/after practice if time permits and only for general inquiries. If you have a formal complaint, we ask that you raise it in writing either through email or letter to any member of the Executive, or dropped off in the lockbox at the front desk of the CUP.

Violence/Bullying/Unsportmanlike Behaviour
Minor issues will be dealt with on deck by the coaches through the yellow/red card system as communicated in the parent/swimmer code of conduct already provided. Issues of a serious or repeated nature will be brought before the Executive. The club does not condone this behaviour even in retaliation. The Executive will investigate and parents will be notified. If the event is serious or repeated, the swimmer may be suspended or ejected from the club on recommendation of the executive/coaches. If the situation involves a parent(s), the same repurcussions apply and your swimmer may be suspended/removed from the club. Parents are not to bring issues to the coaches on deck as per the "No Parents On Deck" policy. You can speak to the coach before/after practice if time permits for minor issues only, and major issues should be addressed through the formal complaint process to any member of the Executive.

Formal Complaints
Formal complaints must be in writing through email or letter to any member of the Executive. If a parents brings a verbal complaint to a member of the board or coaches that they would like action taken for, they will be instructed to raise a formal complaint in writing. The Executive will investigate the contents of the written complaint. We want to make sure that any issue that comes to the board is not miss-quoted. It is up to the parent to make sure the letter is complete and factual to the best of their knowledge. The Executive will take action as necessary.

The SDSC Executive and Coaches wish every swimmer a safe and successful 2010/2011 swim season.

Free courses in Summerside...sign up early!

Now that I've got your attention, Swim PEI is having courses in Summerside and Charlottetown for required swim meet positions. The more people we have sign up, the less we will have to rely on a small group of volunteers for our swim meets. The location for these courses will be decided once we know who is interested. Marguerite Middleton mentioned a time of 6:30-8:30 but they are flexible both on dates and time in Summerside. Please contact me as soon as possible so we can decide if these courses will take place. We need a minimum of 3 people for each course.

Summerside
Oct. 1st - Chief Finish Judge and Electronics course.
Oct. 13th - Stroke and Turn
Nov. 17th - High Tech Clinic / Timers and Starters Clinic

Charlottetown
Oct 14 - Timers/Stroke and Turn 4-6pm
Oct 27th - Timers/Stroke and Turn/Meet Manager 6:30-8:30

It's your club...be involved in making this a great year for the kids.
Thanks.
Kirk.

Hi There
I hope everyone is having a fantastic Summer ! There are a couple of updates that I thought I would bring to your attention before the start of our swim season.

Safe Arrival!
Congratulations to Head Coach Tracy and Mike on the safe arrival of their beautiful daughter Mya Danielle. She was born on July 11th and mom, dad and baby are doing wonderful. Tracy is planning to return to the deck in November and in the interim our coaching team will be supporting Tracy in picking up her deck time.

Board Composition
I am pleased to announce that Kirk Steele has agreed to take on the President role for the upcoming season. Kirk has been an invaluable member of the executive last year leading us through new financial processes and I am confident that he will continue to lead our club to much success.

Given the above, we are currently recruiting a new Treasurer. Please consider if you can volunteer in this critical role – Kirk has provided a solid foundation for our next treasurer to build upon. If you are interested, can you contact me ASAP 

Registration

We will not be offering mail-in registration this year. Registration will be in-person to avoid delays in collecting and correcting any information / cheques. Dates will be set soon and posted on our website.

Anyone who hasn't confirm their attention to return next season, please do so by emailing tmtynski@pei.sympatico.ca

Swim Suits
If your swimmer needs a new suit for this season, please let me know as I am hoping to place an order early September for our returning swimmers.

Enjoy the rest of your Summer and we look forward to seeing everyone on the deck next month!

Volunteer Why?

Before walking off into the sunset, I wanted to discuss the importance of contributing to development of the swim club.
This club has for the last 10 years been a very welcome member of my family. 10 years ago on a night just like last night my daughter Emily won the Landry award and as she picked it up I knew then I was going to have to contribute in some way to the club.
That night, then President Gerry Bioute, was asking - no begging families to help out. The club was 30 strong with a volunteer coach. Believe me when I say this I was not comfortable putting my hand up as I really did not know anyone involved with the club, but I knew that I was going to have to do something.
You see I saw something that night. What is it? I saw the beauty of the sport and what it has to offer the kids.
I saw that there was a club that was going to instill hard work and goal setting for the kid, it was inclusive and kids would win over and over again.
As Emily moved through the club, I started to see the time, energy and commitment that Tracy and the other coaches were putting in. I realized that Tracy would be spending more time with my daughter then I was, and that I could not ask for a more wonderful role model and mentor for my daughter (Thank you again Tracy!).
We are very fortunate to have many "Tracies" in our club. I am sure your children have experienced the positive influence of Lori, Dave, Jennifer, Samantha or Terry in many ways.
You see everyone I really never thought of it as the work but as my responsibility to keep this great forum going and support the people that are making such a wonderful impact in our children’s lives.
So I would ask if people are feeling apprehensive or nervous about volunteering please think of the Club and the way it is contributing to your child’s development. If everyone embraces the work….. great things will continue to happen.
The AGM is up coming and two very critical positions are open. President and Vice President.
Tanya will be a very active Past President and a great resource. I will still be assisting with the meet management for one more year. So the time is right for new people to step forward and help keep things going. As Dave Campbell said last night “ We have something special here”
He is right
Thank you

Volunteers Needed - Garden of the Gulf

Hi All,
that time again to start gathering up volunteers for our end of season provincials. As always, we need lots of parental participation in order to make this a successful event for all the kids. One point of note: a few of you had put your name on our volunteer sheet at the last meet, but it is missing in action. So for those of you who had indicated when you could volunteer, if you could resend the shifts you can work it would be greatly appreciated.

Shift to cover
Friday night - 11 and over meet
Saturday morning - 11 and over meet
Saturday night - 11 and over meet
Sunday morning - 11 and over meet

Our parents really stepped up to the plate for our last two meets - and we hope we can count on you all again.

The first event that is up and coming for our swimmers is the April 10th development meet that we are hosting at our pool. Please see below for the details...

Date: Saturday, April 10th, 2010
Location: CUP
Warm-Up: 9:00-9:35 am for a 9:45 am start time
Eligibility: This meet is open all Dolphin swimmers
Meet Entry Fee: $25.00/swimmer
Meet Entry Deadline: Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

Please let you swimmer's coach know by Tuesday, April 6th, 2010 if your swimmer(s) will be participating in this meet. For the Tier 2 swimmers, since Lori is still out, please let me know if your swimmer will be participating.

Please note that this will be the last Island meet before Provincials. In order for swimmers to be eligible to compete at Provincials, they must compete in at least one swim meet this season (on or off Island). Don't have your swimmer miss out! Provincials is a very fun and exciting meet for our team and it is a great way to end the season for our younger Dolphins!

See you all on the deck!

Thank You

Thank you to everybody who volunteered officiating for the meet this weekend! The meet ran extremely well, and it was a great club effort. A special thank you to Tracy Bowser and Bernadette Campbell and all the others who contributed food for our volunteers. As always - a big thank you to our dedicated coaching staff!

It takes a lot of effort to pull off a meet and it is great to have such a involved group of parents ensuring our Island swimmers have fun and a great meet.

Also, a big thank you to Margaret Whitrow for volunteering her time and refereeing the meet.

Remember, we will be hosting our provincial championships in May, and hopefully we will have the same great participation that we had this weekend. (NOTE: We may try to schedule a stroke/turn officiating clinic before this meet - as it is one area the club needs to have parents certified in)

Once again - THANKS

Grocery Bagging this Weekend at Sobeys

Hi Everyone,
I am touching base to let everyone know that we have a date for a grocery bagging this weekend at Sobeys - Saturday February 20th between 9-5. This is a fantastic opportunity for a fundraiser and one that we can not pass up. This fundraiser is only available to swimmers 11 and over as it will involve working for a three hour shift. The swimmers will be required to pick up the filled grocery bags (once the cashier fills) them and place them in the customers cart. It is easy work but it does make for a long session.
Click on the chart above to see the breakdown the shift placements. Please contact me ASAP if your swimmer is not available. I would also ask parents to volunteer for a shift to help supervise the children.
Thanks everyone for your ongoing support for your club,

Entering Swimmers Into Swim Meets

Hello Parents,

There has seem to be a bit of confusion around who to contact to have your swimmer(s) entered into swim meets. Parents, please contact your swimmer's coach directly via e-mail or phone to have your swimmer entered into the meet. If you have two (or more) swimmers in the program, but they are coached by different coaches, please notify both coaches as individual coaches are responsible for entering their own swimmers.

Thanks everyone! I hope this clears up any confusion.
