Hello Everyone,
Just a quick update on a couple of time changes...
Practice tomorrow morning (Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009) is only a 2 hour practice not a 3 hour practice. That was a typo! So practice tomorrow is from 10:00-12:00.
Also, the stroke clinic tomorrow for everyone (all age groups) is from 12:00 to 1:30. There wasn't enough swimmers signed up for the two clinics so we have combined it into one clinic.
Sorry for the confusion!

Christmas Update
Dear Dolphin Parents:
Wow, it is hard to believe that we are only a week away from Christmas and 2010 is quickly approaching. Before we take a much deserved break over the Holidays, I wanted to touch base on a couple of things:
Last day of practice – Last day of practice is December 23, 2009.
Christmas Camp – A Christmas camp will be held for T3, T4 and Regional groups. Please check the blog for practice times.
Suits / Goggles – Suits have NOT arrived yet, I was told they would arrive before Christmas, but no news yet. I will blog if they come in before Christmas and distribute at the CUP. Goggles – I know that I have received a few calls from folks wanting goggles before Christmas so I will be at the CUP THIS SATURDAY between 10 – 10:30 am (ONLY) if anyone wants them.
BAG – A parent asked me to order a black bag for them at the Christmas Party – Unfortunately this is on back order – please contact me if you want it after Christmas.
Backstroke Clinic – Will be offered during Christmas Break – please check the blog for details.
I think that is it! On behalf of the entire executive, we wish each of you a very merry Christmas and lots of happiness during this special season.

Dolphins Rocked the House!
As coach Dave says, "Nobody comes into our house and pushes us around!". Our Dolphins stepped up to the blocks this weekend and swam their hearts out! We had a total of 34 swimmers compete at this year's event, the most ever for the Dolphins.
There were many of the Dolphin swimmers that swam 100% personal best times and every single swimmer swam at least one best time, including our senior swimmers.
In the 11-12 age category, our Dolphin swimmers were consistently earning the top spots (both male and females).
We had a few more swimmers achieve their "A" times, and many achieve their "B" times.
The Dolphin Swim Club now has 3 swimmers ranked in the top 50 in Canada in their age group. Those swimmers are:
Molly Wedge: 50 Free (24th)
100 Free (32nd)
50 Fly (32nd)
Evan Tynski: 400 Free (43rd)
50 Breast (45th)
Zach Doiron: 400 Free (40th)
50 Breast (22nd)
100 Breast (47th)
200 Breast (30th)
Congratulations to all Dolphins swimmers! You all swam amazing!
Also, a big thank-you to all the parents that helped out during the meet. We could not have put on such a great meet without all of you! Thank-you!
Please check the blog soon for details on the next swim meet.

Volunteer Activities
Dear Dolphin Parents,
The volunteer incentive program that was introduced this year appears to be quite a success! We had lots of families on the deck during our time trial October 17th – which was awesome!
John Bowser has ‘volunteered’ to keep track of our club’s volunteer activities, so when you volunteer, please email John so he can keep track of the number of ballots you will receive towards a free registration next year. His email is: jbowser@eastlink.ca
We still have lots to accomplish this year, so if you have any interest in the following, please let me know. (click here for a complete list of volunteer opportunities: HYPERLINK)
Sponsorship:
We would love to explore securing sponsorship for your club. This may be designed as a bronze – silver – gold sponsor program, or securing one major sponsor. With a growing club, a sponsor could assist in branding our club (and their business), suits for our swimmers, help with hosting meets, and so on. If you have any interest in working with a group towards this goal, please let me know.
Meet November 22-24th:
NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY
We will be hosting the Fall Splash meet in November. Last year was the first time SDSC hosted a three day meet and it was a huge success thanks to all the families who gave us a few hours of their time. There are many roles to fill, so please let J Hammer know if you can give some time: jhammer@city.summerside.pe.ca
Friday November 22 (evening only)
Saturday November 23 (morning and / or evening)
Sunday November 24 (morning only)
Social Committee:
The social committee will be lead this year by Karen Steele. The SDSC hopes to have 3-4 fun activities for our team throughout the year. Karen would love to have some creative parents join her with these projects – If you are interested, please just show up on November 7th at 2 pm at the Credit Union Place. (stroke clinics are happening that afternoon). Contact info:
hammersteele@hotmail.com or by phoning 888-3899.
Thanks everyone,
Tanya

Fantastic Results Achieved by Dolphin Swimmers this Past Weekend!
This past weekend our club had 42 swimmers compete at the Pentathlon Meet in Charlottetown. Our team saw fantastic results! We are only one month into the season and already we saw major improvements in stroke technique. Along with improvements in technique came many personal best times. Overall our team achieved 78% personal best times! That is super for the first meet of the year!
To see the complete set of results, check out our bulletin board at the pool.
There are swimmers that met a new milestone this past weekend that I would like to highlight.
The Pentathlon Meet was the first swim meet EVER for the following swimmers...
Ally Clow
Lydia Hemphill
Emily MacIssac
Logan Palmer
Chelsey Perry
Congratulations to you five for an outstanding first meet!
The following swimmers achieved their "East Coast" standard for the first time...

First Meet Advice
Parents:
As our first team meet is only 48 hours away, I thought I would 'cut-and-paste' some points to consider in preparation. I know for many Dolphin parents, this is your first meet, so feel free to ask lots of questions. Meets are a very exciting time for our swimmers - it is why they work so hard in practice. I am sure you will find Saturday exciting as well - GO DOLPHINS!!!!!
•Pack lots of clothing and towels for your swimmer. They will go through lots of them through the day.
•Pack water, healthy snacks and drinks. Coaches will probably give your swimmer some advice before a meet on the best choices.
•Make sure you get directions to the pool before you leave.
•Pack a lawn chair – some pools have seating and some do not, so it is always best to be prepared with a chair.
•Do not take pictures at the start of a race, as the flash of the camera interferes with the race start.
•Pools, as a rule, are very warm. You may wish to dress in layers, bring along a pair of sandals or pack a pair of shorts.
•For off island meets, team members are usually asked to stay until the last swimmer on the team is finished, so everyone can cheer their teammate on.
•Even though parents are not competing in a meet, you will find sitting in a hot pool for the better part of a day very tiring. When attending weekend meets, try not to plan too many events, as you will need time to rest.
•In the majority of cases, programs will be sold at meets, so you may want to make sure you bring some cash along. The program will show your swimmers best time (if they have one) for the event for which they are registered.
•Many pools do not have electronic timer systems. I would encourage you to bring along a stop watch so you can celebrate any personal bests your swimmer might achieve. It is also a great tool to see how other Dolphins are doing and to encourage them when they achieve a personal best. This is a great way to build team spirit.
•A few days after the meet, you can visit our website (www.summersidedolphins.ca) and click on the results button. This will take you to the swim direct website where the results of the meet are posted (you do not need to log onto this service.)

Junior Dolphins Hit the Water!
Hello Dolphins!
Just an FYI that your club is expanding to include new programming called
Junior Dolphins. This program will target ages 5-7 and focus on development towards tier one entry. Head Coach Tracy will lead this group for 30 minutes each Tuesday between 5:30 - 6:00.
The Junior Dolphins program is a wonderful addition to our club. In the past, we have had to turn some young swimmers away because they were not quite ready to swim the full length of the pool. This program is designed to meet the needs of these young children, starting off in the leisure pool with shorter class duration.
I know many of you are around the pool on Tuesdays, so please join with me in welcoming our newest team members starting Tuesday October 20th!
(We are almost full, but if you know someone who is interested, please contact Tracy)
Thanks!

Hi Everyone:
I had a question about our lotto license for our tickets. We did purchase this, however, the number was left off the actual tickets when we printed. If anyone runs into problems in this regard, please let me know and I can supply you the number. Sorry about that....

Tiers 3, 4 and Regional/National will be meeting October 10 between 10:30 – 11:30 at the Credit Union Place. It is CRITICAL that you attend as important information about your child’s swim season will be shared at this meeting.
Caps / Suits: I have had lots of interest in caps and suits. Caps will be provided to our new swimmers in October and I will be ordering more to have in stock for purchase. Orders for suits and goggles will be taken during the parent meetings.
In the meantime, our new swimmers can wear their regular suits from the summer.
Tickets: We have replaced our swim-a-thon fundraiser with ticket sales. Tickets need to be turned in by November 30. Please drop them off at the Credit Union Place and ask the front desk to place them in the Dolphins Box. Those who did not receive tickets – I will have them on hand at the parent’s meeting. If you want them before then, please make arrangements to pick them up by contacting me directly at 436-5794.
Registration / Payments: Can be dropped off at the Credit Union Place by asking the front desk to place in our locked box.
Volunteerism: There are still lots of space for volunteers. Please think about your ability to volunteer for things such as the social committee, web design / maintenance, policy development, and so on.
Yours in swimming,
Tanya Tynski
Dear Parents / Swimmers:
It is hard to believe that we are back in the pool and another Dolphins season is upon us! The executive is very excited about the upcoming year as we have expanded our club in members, coaches and programming. We thank you for your patience during our assessment week. By this time, swimmers will have confirmed tier placement and all coaches will be in place. Thanks for your understanding!
A few things to keep in mind:
Communication: Please check out our website blog for updates. This is our primary method of communication. Check often!!
Parents meeting: Parent meetings are scheduled for the first part of October. Tiers 1A, 1B and 2 will be meeting October 13th at the Credit Union Place between 5-6pm. Hi Everyone:
We seem to have lost a silicone cap and a bathing suit. These were lost in the boys change room so please check your son's swim bag and let me know if you find anything extra! Thanks,

No Early Morning Practices Until October
Hello Everyone!
As some of you know...we are still working out the kinks! My apologies about the mix up with yesterday's early morning practice. I think we missed a few people so I just wanted to pass along the message again. There are NO MORNING practices, including Saturdays until the week of October 5, 2009. So the first early morning practice will be for the Regional Group on Wednesday, October 7, 2009.
See you all on the deck!

SWIM SUIT RULING
Swimmers, Coaches and Parents:
Please note the following ruling that I received yesterday. It is effective immediately:
Effective September 1, 2009, all swimwear worn in swimming competitions sanctioned under the authority of Swimming Canada must conform to the January 1, 2010 FINA swimwear approval guidelines as listed below.
MATERIAL – The material of swimwear will definitively be constituted only by textile fabric(s). The FINA definition of “textile” currently is: “Material consisting of, natural and/or synthetic, individual and non-consolidated yarns used to constitute a fabric by weaving, knitting, and/or braiding.”
SHAPE – MEN: swimwear shall not extend above the navel or below the knee. WOMEN: swimwear shall not cover the neck, extend past the shoulder, nor extend below knee. No zippers or other fastening system is allowed. USE – Swimmers shall wear only one swimsuit, taping is not permitted.
CONSISTENCY – Swimwear effectively manufactured and used shall correspond to and be fully consistent with FINA approved samples. Any modification before use (including impregnation) is prohibited. Moreover, there shall be no variation/modification for individual swimmers.

Annual General Meeting
Hello Dolphin Parents:
Just a friendly reminder that the SDSC Annual General Meeting is scheduled for this coming Monday, June 22nd between 6-6:30 pm at the Credit Union Place.
Part of the agenda will include nominations for open executive positions and filling necessary volunteer rolls to ensure our club runs effectively next year. At present, I have names for all executive positions (with a couple to be confirmed before Monday). There are also a number of other critical rolls that we need to identify resources to fill such as:
• Swim PEI Parent Rep (a meeting in ch’town once a month)
• Policy development (assistance with formalizing our governance structure and
operational policies)
• Team clothing coordination
• Meet Manager and Officials Coordination (when we host meets)
• Social Committee (the more the merrier!)
• Communication
If you have interest in any of the above, please let me know before the meeting (especially if you can’t make it).
The club is growing fast with new swimmers, but we must also grow our parent support.
"You are the only person on this earth who can use your ability."
Thanks,
Tanya

Dear Parents:
Wow! What a great evening we had at our annual awards banquet. Thanks to everyone for coming out and supporting the swimmers and your club. It was such a great way to wrap up our season!
Believe it or not, we are already busy doing some preliminary planning for next season. Certainly you can change your mind over the Summer, but it does give us a ‘sense’ of returning swimmers.
I have attached the list of swimmer placement for next season.

There is going to be a fun event for the 10 & Unders on Sunday so we are encouraging all of our younger swimmers to come on Sunday to cheer on our Dolphins, watch some of the FAST racing and then participate in the fun event planned. Awards will be given our to swimmers of all ages so we don't want anyone to miss out. I will post more information on the fun event and the awards ceremony once I receive it from Swim PEI.
Parents, please contact your swimmer's coach to confirm your swimmers participation at the meet. This is a meet that you won' t want to miss!
See you on the deck!

Dear Swim PEI Board, Swim PEI club presidents and head coaches:
As a follow-up to our last board meeting, the following are two dates for the Clinic Refresher courses delivered by Gardiner MacNeill, Chair Island Officials. As per the attached document, Gardiner will also present the "How To’s" on how to become involved with Canada Games Swimming.
These two refresher sessions will only deal with Timekeeper, Stroke and Turn and Chief Timekeeper.
We are copying the head coaches, as this is a wonderful opportunity to have your older swimmers (16 & older) not participating as an athlete to be part of the Canada Games as an on-deck volunteer. We will require assistance with the award ceremonies, spectator marshaling, deck wipers, etc. So please spread the word to your swimmers. No advance registration for these two sessions are necessary as there are no costs for you to participate.
If a Summerside or Montague member is unavailable for the 15th, you are more than welcome to join the Charlottetown session on the 16th and vise versa.
DATES & LOCATION:
May 15th starting at 6:00 p.m. Credit Union Place Room #2
May 16 starting at 9:00 a.m. CARI Meeting room located between hockey arenas.
Kind Regards,
Sandi Lowther

Canada Games Volunteer Opportunity!
Dear Swimming Parent,
INVITE TO OFFICIATE AT 2009 CANADA GAMES
As you are aware PEI is hosting the 2009 Canada Games from August 15 to August 29, 2009.
For our Swimming community all the focus is on the second week of the Games (August 23 to 29) when we host Canada Games Swimming at the CARI Pool in Charlottetown and the 10 kilometer Open Water Swim in the South West River in Clinton. Swim PEI has been working over the past two years to provide training through clinics and on deck mentoring to ensure that any member of our swimming community that wanted to be involved with the 2009 Games would be certified.
Recently some people have asked what they can do at Canada Games Swimming.
1) Canada Games in conjunction with Swim Canada is responsible to select the Major Officials (Referee, Starter, Chief Inspector, etc) from people across the country.
2) Swim PEI is responsible to select the Minor Officials (Lane Timers, Head Lane Timers, Marshal, Recorder/Scorers, Runner and Safety Marshal). This means that Swim PEI needs to have 34 people for each of our 10 swimming sessions during the week. It is our intent to fill these position with Swim PEI members then to offer additional position to our neighboring provinces of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
To be a Minor Official, we ask that you be Level II certified (Timekeeper, Stroke and Turn and one other from the list below)
• Clerk of Course;
• Chief Timekeeper;
• Meet Manager;
• Chief Finish Judge/Chief Judge Electronics/Recorder Scorer (counts as 1 position);
• Starter.
Many of our members have already achieved this level, however some have asked if there is any refresher sessions available. Therefore Swim PEI is offering three refresher sessions to help people achieve their Level II. These sessions will only deal with Timekeeper, Stroke and Turn and Chief Timekeeper.
If you have any questions regarding your current level please contact Gardiner MacNeill, Swim PEI Chair - Officials, atagmacneill@islandtelecom.com.

Marianne Limpert Team Champs- Additional Information
Hello Everyone,
I have been getting a few questions about the meet this weekend and I just wanted to clarify a few things as this meet is for some, their first ever championship meet. Very exciting....
As I mentioned, this is a championship meet. There are prelims during in the morning sessions and finals (top 8) during the evening sessions. There is expected to be allot of swimmers at the meet so more than likely, we will have a split warm-up. I will let the swimmers know what time they need to be at the pool for each session. Friday morning's session is definitely 9:00 AM warm-up.
There are a few things that I do ask from the swimmers while attending championship meets. During the prelims (morning sessions), as soon as a swimmer is finished their last race, they can leave the pool. They do not have to stay around to wait for the rest of the swimmers to finish. However, for finals (evening sessions), all swimmers have to return to the pool to warm-up with the team and stay until the last Dolphin swimmer is finished. The only exception to this is Sunday's finals session. If your swimmer is not swimming in finals on Sunday, they can leave right after their last swim in the morning.
The last thing that I ask from the swimmers while attending championship meets is that they eat healthy throughout the entire weekend. Absolutely no junk food! Mom and Dad...I need your support on this one! Please assist me and encouraging your swimmer to make healthy choices when going out to eat.
Thanks for your cooperation! See you in Fredericton!

Relay Clinic in Charlottetown for Bluephins and Dolphins
Hello Everyone,
I just wanted to let you all know that the Bluephins are hosting a relay clinic today from 1:00-3:00 at CARI. They have new equipment for Canada Games, relay take off platforms, which can detect the difference between touch and takeoff. This is open to anyone interested in improving their starts and nailing their relay take-offs.
This is a great opportunity for our swimmers as we don't have this equipment at our facility, so if you are free this afternoon, I encourage you to check out this clinic.
Happy Sunday!

Dolphins Update
Hello Parents and Dolphins!
It is hard to believe that we are in the middle of April with this snow – but it is true! That means that our swim year will be coming to an end over the next couple of months. There is still lots of great stuff happening with the SDSC and I wanted to provide you a bit of an update:
Year End Banquet
We are excited that we will be hosting our year-end banquet at the Credit Union Place again this year. The date has been confirmed for June 8th starting at 6:15 pm. Last year was AMAZING – we are looking forward to celebrating another great swimming season! Details regarding tickets will be posted in mid May.
Team Building
We will be organizing a fun event for the entire team over the next several weeks.
Details to follow soon.
Grocery Bagging
A big THANK YOU to our 11+ swimmers and parents who bagged groceries last Saturday. It was very successful!!!! The club depends on this level of success to maintain registration fees, pool rentals, equipment and so on.
The final grocery bagging is scheduled for May 16th. Details will follow (Thanks to Eva Strongman for organizing this!)
Clinic in Ch’town
Swim PEI will be hosting a clinic in Charlottetown for relay take offs on Saturday April 26th. New equipment has been purchased for Canada Games and it is a great opportunity for Island swimmers to test it as it will be used in our upcoming Garden of the Gulf.
Times will be made available this weekend – please check back.
Final Bathing Suit Order
Please contact me by email (tmtynski@pei.sympatico.ca) before April 27th for any orders. This will be the last order of the Season. As a reminder, The SDSC only places orders for Dolphins and Masters (no other requests please).
Thanks everyone,
Tanya

End of Season- Tier 1 & 2
Hello Everyone,
Over the past few weeks, there has been a few questions around when the swimming season ends for the Tier 1 & 2 groups. Just to clarify...the last day of swimming for the Tier 1 Group is Thursday, May 28, 2009 and the last day of swimming for the Tier 2 Group is Saturday, May 30, 2009.
Due to the number of snow storms we have had this season, we would like to offer an additional week of swimming for the Tier 1 & 2 groups that would take them through until the Year End Banquet (June 8, 2009). We are still trying to confirm availability with the coaches. Please check back soon for the update.
The last practice for the other groups are the following...
Tier 3's- Outdoor Meet (which I believe is the last weekend in June but that isn't confirmed)
Tier 4's- Outdoor Meet for those swimmers that haven't qualified for East Coast
East Coast Long Course Champs for those swimmers that qualify (July 2-5, 2009)
Regional- East Coast Long Course Champs (July 2-5, 2009)
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact myself or Tanya Tynski.
Thanks!

BUS OPTION - Travel with Bluefins
Hi Again,
I have been asked to see if there are any SDSC swimmers interested in travelling on the Bluefin's bus. They only have about 20 seats filled and need more swimmers to make it worth their while.
Please let me know by 7 pm tomorrow (Wednesday) if you are interested. I will forward the numbers to the Bluefins and hopefully it will be a go.
If the bus is a go, we will arrange drop off / pick up on the East side of S'side (ADL parking lot or something like that). I will be in touch.

To see what the t-shirt looks like, you can check out the Charlottetown Bluephins website to see a sample. If you would like to order a shirt for your swimmer, please let me know by Friday, January 16, 2009.
